With a distinguished career that includes nine consecutive appearances at the Bayreuth Festival, Mihoko Fujimura is regarded as one of the world's finest mezzo-sopranos. Her overwhelming singing ability and deep intelligence in every detail of her performance have captivated many audiences. This recording is from a concert she gave with the New Japan Philharmonic in November 2013. Conductor Meyer has been the first assistant at the Bayreuth Festival since 1992 and conducted "Tannhäuser" in 2007 as a substitute for Fabio Luisi. He and Fujimura had performed together in Europe and hit it off well, leading to this concert. In addition to Marschner, which is rarely performed, Fujimura's program of Wagner's masterpieces, which is his forte, has been eagerly anticipated by many fans. The Parsifal Suite was arranged by Meier himself. The performance by Meier and the New Japan Philharmonic was delicate and graceful, avoiding excesses of expression.
