Sapphire and diamond ring, circa 1920. The striking shape of this untreated sapphire is known as an ‘emerald cut’. Originally developed specifically for emeralds due to their brittleness, the emerald cut, with its cut corners and low profile, reduced the likelihood of damage. The sleek, look that this cut created exploded in popularity during the Art Deco period (c. 1920-1939), and a number of different stones starting to be cut in this way, complimenting the simple, geometric forms that were the basis of this style. Burmese sapphires, such as the present example, are famed for their quality and saturation, and are among the finest in the world. This beautiful, velvety blue stone, weighing approximately 3.00 carats, is flanked by shoulders set with circular-cut diamonds with delicate millegrain borders – a perfect, simple touch for this sophisticated and elegant ring.
