The year 139 was the restart of the Great Sothic Cycle: an Egyptian celebration of a 1461-year cycle commencing when the celestial alignment of the star Sothis (known today as the star Sirius) and the sun rose in unison on the horizon. This tetradrachm coin design was first struck during the second year of Emperor Pius' reign in 138/139, and again in the sixth year 142/143.
Dated to the Emperor's 6th regnal year, L Ϛ = 142/43 CE.
NGC Certified to VF, Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5 (very high subgrades for Alexandria),13.37g, approx. 23mm.
