Yunnan: An Unparalleled Source of Tea Leaves

In my 20 years of running a tea company and visiting countless tea-growing regions, I’ve come to the firm belief that Yunnan stands out as the world’s most exceptional origin for tea leaf material. In particular, the mountainous areas of Lincang boast altitudes around 2,000 meters and are home to scattered tea gardens where cultivation is done naturally—without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

What makes this region even more unique are places like Yongde and Zhenkang counties, where we source our teas. These areas still have a large number of old tea trees, many of which are over 300 years old. You simply won’t find growing conditions like this anywhere else.

This combination of high elevation, natural farming, and ancient trees slows down the growth of the tea plants. As a result, the leaves mature slowly, allowing the cell structure to develop densely and helping the leaves to store more minerals and polyphenols. Teas produced from such leaves offer a rich and deep flavor with a long, satisfying finish—leaving a lasting impression with every sip.

Our Efforts to Create Unique Teas in Yunnan

While Yunnan is renowned for its exceptional tea-growing environment, the region’s processing techniques are not as advanced as in other provinces. As a result, the range of teas traditionally produced there tends to be limited. However, given the outstanding quality of Yunnan’s tea leaves, we have been working closely with local producers to experiment with new methods and create teas that break away from the usual Yunnan style.

Our latest creation, the Yunnan Chun Jian Green Tea, is a perfect example of this approach. It’s made from premium-grade tea leaves that would normally be processed into raw Pu-erh or white tea. Instead, we intentionally crafted it into a green tea. The result is a tea with an exceptionally long-lasting aftertaste and a rich, concentrated flavor—something that challenges the conventional expectations of what green tea can be.

A Yunnan Green Tea with Floral, Nutty Aroma and Deep Aftertaste

This green tea is crafted from one bud and two leaves handpicked in early April, grown in the high mountains of Zhenkang County, Lincang, Yunnan, at an altitude of 2,100 meters.

Using traditional wood-fired wok roasting, the tea develops a fragrance reminiscent of Longjing (Dragon Well) tea, with subtle notes of roasted nuts and delicate floral tones. If you enjoy classic Chinese green teas like Longjing, this tea will feel both familiar and refreshing.

What truly sets it apart, however, is its incredibly long and full-bodied aftertaste—far richer than most Chinese green teas. It leaves a lasting impression on the palate and offers a deeply satisfying drinking experience.

As mentioned earlier, while Yunnan produces exceptionally high-quality tea leaves, many of these tea-growing regions are located in remote mountainous areas. This geographical isolation allows us to source premium raw materials at a relatively affordable cost.

That’s why we’re able to offer this tea—made from excellent leaves—at a reasonable price. It’s a great option for daily drinking.

In the warmer months, this green tea is especially enjoyable as a cold brew. Simply steep a small amount of tea leaves in water and leave it in the fridge overnight. The result is a refreshing, flavorful drink that’s not only soothing but also rich in antioxidants and polyphenols—perfect for revitalizing your body and keeping you feeling refreshed throughout the day.
