This special miniature sheet from St. Helena was issued on 1 July 1997 to mark the historic return of Hong Kong to China. It features a 75p stamp depicting the St. Helena Plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae), also known as the Wirebird – the island’s national bird – against a scenic background. The sheet’s design includes a night view of Hong Kong harbour with the message “Best Wishes & Good Fortune” in English and Chinese, symbolizing friendship and goodwill between the Commonwealth and China. A fine piece linking St. Helena’s natural heritage with a major moment in world history.
