Original handwoven tapestry, 2022
Michelle Driver
Ready to hang
Warp / Weft is a handwoven tapestry that foregrounds the structural logic of weaving as both material and concept. Constructed on a loom, the work brings attention to the quiet tension between vertical warp and horizontal weft - threads that hold, cross, obscure, and reveal.
In tapestry, the warp forms the fixed architecture: taut, load-bearing, largely unseen. The weft moves across it, building image and surface through repetition, interruption, and knotting. What is visible is the result of labour that remains partially concealed - an image held up by what it refuses to show.
Only the weft threads present themselves on the surface, carrying the work’s visual weight while the warp remains hidden beneath. The result is dense, deliberate, and slightly withholding, balancing order with unease.
This work was featured in Radical Textiles at the Art Gallery Of South Australia.
